In December 2010, scientists in the United States and Germany developed a multifunctional Nano-biological conjugated technology, which provided the ability to transport antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (AONs) across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-brain tumor barrier (BTB), and targeted their payloads at tumors for receptor-regulated cell uptake, intracellular escape and release into the cytoplasm. Using this technique, the researchers demonstrated an inhibitory effect on the growth of intracranial tumors in a xenograft mouse model of human glioma.
